A biography of this famous American statesman.

Thomas Jefferson Henry Childs Merwin 9781406895582 Books

This book is not a comprehensive or exhaustive biography of Thomas Jefferson. However, if you would like to learn more about our 3rd President , I would highly recommend this book. The author does a very good job of integrating the major events in Mr. Jefferson's life against the backdrop of the colonial culture. I particularly the author's frank portrayal which served to dispel some of the myths surrounding the memory of President Jefferson.

This was a very interesting book. It was mostly about politics and the presidents who were still trying to get away from England. So 3/4 of the book was about politics. Thomas Jefferson was a very self disciplined person. He had numerous guests there all the time relatives, families, and friends would come and stay weeks and months at a time. Jefferson always got up at dawn and would write letters and do paper work until noon, he would eat lunch and go horse riding for exercise for two hours regardless who was there or how many people was there. He kept the same routine even after he retired. He would also advise Madison and Monroe when they were president when needed on political matters. He was a quiet man and seemed to handle everything in an orderly manner. When he received letter he always answered them. When he died at the age of 62, he had 26,000 letters that had not been opened yet. He died on July 4th, the same day John Adams died July 4th.
My daughter chose this book as her non-fiction summer reading selection. She learned so many interesting facts about Thomas Jefferson that she'd never have discovered during the brief overview at school. I'm very grateful that the dreaded "nonfiction" required reading came alive for her through this selection. Kudos to the author!
I bought this book for my 5th grader who loves to read science fiction. His teacher had the idea of having him read a biography in between each science fiction book. So I bought a few of the DK biographies. He flipped through this one and then got to reading. It reads like a short novel and has great pictures. If I could afford to, I would love to buy the entire DK Biography set.
Short, but some new insights into the life of this insightful man. Even heroes have flaws. Interesting how many great political leaders died in financials poverty.
A well written book that everyone should read and learn from history. If we as a nation fail to learn from history we are surly will repeat it and all of it's failure's.
Great reference for an elementary age student.
This biography was at best brief and fast paced so it's good if your unfamiliar with Jefferson band looking for some basic information on the course of his life. It brings up some good points about bis political views but still attempts to glorify him without introducing many of his flaws, other than his fragile personality. It also doesn't really touch the issues of slavery in his life or the Sally Hemmings aff
air. But nonetheless it highlights some of his best achievements and shares why he was an important figure in American history.
