Ollie Wit is the strongest Shadow Walker born in decades but it’s a gift with a steep price. Walking in the Shadowlands can bring untold powers and spells, and even greater risks. Every step into that other world brings her closer to the monsters that have haunted her since a child, destroyed her family and wreaked havoc all around her. Kane knows Ollie is the key to getting the spell he needs and he’s the answer to ending her torment. But it’s a bargain that brings her closer to her own destruction. Even if she succeeds, will she be able to walk away from the newfound power that comes with walking in the Shadowlands?

I have a confession: I almost didn't read this book. The author had written a prior series (The Keepers series), which I had disliked. Yet, with all the positive reviews, I thankfully decided to give it a chance. In the world of self-publishing, many authors try to create protagonists that are really sarcastic and independent--in the hands of an unskilled author, however, that typically translates into the character being bratty and stupid. Thankfully, Donna Augustine did not allow that to happen. Rather the main character, Ollie, is funny, smart, and knows when to listen and when to act (and did I mention funny?). And the dynamic between the mean-girl secretary and Ollie? Pure awesomeness. I am looking forward to the sequel.

Olivia wishes that the world would just end. She will not commit suicide because she made a promise, but after she loses everything, why would she want to get up in the morning? It also doesn't help that she sees shadow monsters lurking everywhere and they want to be around her for some reason. She cannot escape them.

A month after a catastrophe, some shady characters take an interest in Ollie and want to bring her to someone. She wants nothing to do with it until she founds out this person may have some answers as to why she is so different. At that point, she's willing to listen.

This brings Ollie into a world she never knew existed. It brings her into a world where people think she is a "paper doll" and will soon deteriorate into nothing. But it is also a world with answers and some people that could help her experience a normal life for the first time ever.

In the romance area of this series, we meet Kane. Kane is the head honcho of this new world and has a job he needs Ollie to help him with. In return, he'll help Ollie with her monsters. Kane has an ego that's through the roof, and he's very cold emotionally, but he has answers, and right now, Ollie needs them.

I loved this book. There's great chemistry between Ollie and Kane, and the rest of the cast are a lot of fun to experience. You get some good laughs along the way. It's not an overly dark book which I like, and Ollie has a strong will. Her lack of caring if she lives makes her willing to go toe-to-toe with anyone. You've got to respect her even if she is rough around the edges. Definitely a great book.
A Step into the Dark is the fast-paced story about Olivia Wit; a girl everyone knows is monster-seeing crazy until she finds her value in the Shadowlands. A bit lost, a bit alone, Olivia learns to navigate a whole new world where she’s not as crazy as she thought and just might be able parley her powers into great deeds.

I just loved this book, but I’m already a huge fan of Donna Augustine. She writes amazingly flawed and strong characters and her world-building is always perfection. This was a great story and I look forward to reading the sequel.
interesting new world and great dialogue. Ollie has lost her whole family in an explosion, and she thinks it's her fault. She sees monsters - semi-permeable shadows, and when she spoke to one, the building explodes. Enter Kane (and his henchmen), who gives Ollie the barest of information about herself and hopes to recruit her to retrieve a spell from the Shadowlands. Things go wrong, as they usually do when people are more interested in compliance than education. Kane doesn't do much in the way of education, and so when unnatural stuff happens, Ollie isn't really prepared. Cue the cliffhanger.

Love Donna Augustine's work for the most part. It has an interesting plot and fresh world-building, but I've noticed that in all her books, the male and female characters are the same. The female is headstrong and prickly. She has lost her family in some tragic way, and she has trouble with close friendship, especially intimate relationships. She's insecure when it comes to guys and real feelings. The guy is strong/powerful and in some leadership position. He seems interested from the start, but "gives her space" to work out her own feelings. He's not straightforward about his feelings, relying on the female's power of inference, and he's generally not communicative, which feeds the female's insecurities. I understand these are traditional archetypes based on reality, but it would be nice to see some variation in the characters between series. Perhaps a female protagonist could actually say what she feels or thinks in a straightforward manner. Instead of saying "I'm fine," she could maybe blurt out "you confuse me! I don't understand why you do what you do." Humans do have moments that defy their personalities and historical baggage.

Even so, I am thoroughly entertained by Donna Augustine's work, and will continue to read. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.
I really enjoyed most of this book. The characters are engaging and interesting, the worldbuilding is well done, the plot moved at a nice pace. I love watching Ollie's growth over the book and seeing the other characters open up to her. Overall wonderful. I liked her times stepping into the shadow world and the connection with Kane. This seemed like the opening to a great series. So I do encourage you to give it a try.

However, I won't be reading the rest of the series. At about 80% in I read the synopsis for book 2, and that stopped my interest in the book and series dead. After all the hard work in book 1 to forget a connection with Kane and the friends she's been making, she throws them all away and apparently has to spend book 2 regaining them. Nope, not interested. I looked up book 3 and saw that apparently that one involves her spending the book trying to get everyone (including Kane) to take her seriously. Sorry, I like forward momentum with my intercharacter relationships, not stories that set this back to zero at the start of each new book.
I have a confession I almost didn't read this book. The author had written a prior series (The Keepers series), which I had disliked.
